Gisborne, City of the Sun

I am now in Gisborne where captain Cook (well his cabin boy) fist saw New Zealand all those years ago. As a result there are statues every where. Even on top of a big hill so may have to walk up it tomorrow.

I came down the east cost for Tauranga where I have spent a few days with my aunt taking advantage of a comfy bed, hot water and good food. I stopped off on the way down at East Cape which is the most Easterly place in the world and the first place to see the sun rise.

I camped just down the road from the lighthouse looking out over the beach next to a German couple who where out of 5 weeks traverling round in a campervan. It was a good night of exchanging stories made better buy the fact that as an English man I was expected to like beer - who am I to argue - so drank until it went dark.

The next morning if got up at 5:30am (yes in the morning) and climbed the 700 steps up to the light house to watch the sun rise. It has to be said that there was nothing special looking about it but for the fact that on Sunday, 5th Febuary I Iain Ferguson was (excluding any one at sea) probably the first person on planet earth to see the sun. And with that thought I went back to bed.
